Government officials added that the unified database will prevent confusion from multiple tax numbers across states and improve revenue administration. They assured Nigerians that personal data on the portal is protected

A recent survey shows that more than 98 per cent of Nigerians who have used the new national Tax Identification Number (TIN) portal describe the process as smooth, fast, and stress-free.

The survey, conducted across WhatsApp, Facebook, and X, revealed that retrieving a Tax ID takes less than a minute and can be done remotely, without visiting any government office.

The portal, which became operational on January 1, 2026, serves as a centralised database for taxpayers nationwide. It is jointly managed by the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) and the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS). Individuals can generate their 13-digit Tax ID using their National Identity Number (NIN), while businesses can retrieve theirs through registration details from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Users praised the portal’s speed and simplicity. Amina Yahaya from Abuja said: “It didn’t take even 10 seconds after I entered my NIN for my Tax ID to appear. The process was very seamless.” Oyedemi Jide from Lagos described the system as “simple and easy to use,” while Trinity Music Academy called the service “amazing.”

Executive Secretary of the JRB, Olusegun Adesokan, said the portal was designed as a self-service system to make tax compliance more convenient for citizens and businesses.

Adesokan also addressed concerns that the new Tax ID would allow automatic deductions from bank accounts. “Speculations about arbitrary withdrawals are false. The reforms are pro-poor and pro-growth, providing incentives for low-income earners and all taxpayers,” he said.

Government officials added that the unified database will prevent confusion from multiple tax numbers across states and improve revenue administration. They assured Nigerians that personal data on the portal is protected under strict data protection laws.

The JRB urged all individuals and businesses who have not yet retrieved their Tax IDs to visit the official portal to ensure compliance and avoid future complications.
