Five suspects have been for allegedly torturing a 38-year-old, Samuel Ofiri, who was accused of rape to death in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa state.
DSP Musa Mohammed, the spokesperson for police in Bayelsa announced this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Yenagoa.
According to him, the incident was reported at the Kolo Police Division of the Bayelsa Command at about 3:30p.m. on February 22.
He said operatives swiftly mobilised to Kakatar Road, in Otuoke and found a lifeless male body following the report.
He said that the corpse was removed and deposited at Federal Medical Center, Otuoke.
“Upon sting operation by the operatives, five suspects were arrested at Kakatar Road, Otuoke Community, in connection with the death of the deceased.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the deceased was allegedly accused of raping a lady and was taken to an apartment in Kakatar Road, Otuoke Community, and was tortured by the suspects, which led to his death,” he said.
The Bayelsa Police PRO said that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department and the suspects would be prosecuted at the completion of investigation.
Mohammed quoted Bayelsa Commissioner of Police warning members of the public against self-help or jungle justice.
“Suspicious activities are advised to be reported at the nearest Police Station or call 07034578208/ 09167322691,” he added.
