Schumer slams Trump: “He’s in a Bubble, Clueless about Americans”
Quick Read
When questioned about Democratic lawmakers' reactions, such as Rep. Ilhan Omar's vocal responses, Schumer defended his colleagues, describing their conduct as "extremely reserved and well-behaved" in the face of what he called Trump's "hostile and nasty" rhetoric.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized President Donald Trump for being disconnected from everyday Americans, accusing him of living in a “bubble” that blinds him to pressing issues like affordability, in a pointed response to the president’s State of the Union address.
In an interview with CNN’s John Berman, the New York Democrat lambasted Trump’s speech as “filled with hype and fluff,” arguing it failed to address the “basic” concerns weighing on ordinary citizens.
“He’s in a bubble,” Schumer said. “He doesn’t even know what the average American is going through.”
Schumer contrasted Trump’s remarks with the Democratic rebuttal delivered by Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, praising her focus on affordability as a reflection of what truly matters to voters.
“She talked about what the American people really care about, which is affordability,” he noted, underscoring a “glaring” divide between the parties and between Trump’s perspective and the realities facing the nation.
The critique comes amid heightened partisan tensions, amplified by incidents during the address itself.
When questioned about Democratic lawmakers’ reactions, such as Rep. Ilhan Omar’s vocal responses, Schumer defended his colleagues, describing their conduct as “extremely reserved and well-behaved” in the face of what he called Trump’s “hostile and nasty” rhetoric.
He dismissed the president’s use of “epithets” unrelated to improving lives, adding, “The bottom line is: Compare what maybe a few Democrats did to what Donald Trump did for the whole speech, and it ain’t even close who was more out of line, who was more raucous.”
Schumer also touched on national security matters, referencing a classified briefing he and other Gang of Eight members received on Iran prior to the address. While declining to reveal details, he characterized the session as “very serious” and urged Trump to clearly articulate his foreign policy objectives to the American public.
