FIFA President Gianni Infantino says he is confident Mexico can safely host World Cup matches despite a recent wave of cartel violence, implying fans have nothing to be worried about.

Speaking to AFP on Tuesday in Barranquilla, Colombia, Infantino said: “Very reassured, everything’s good. It’s going to be spectacular.”

His comments come two days after the army killed Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, head of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The move triggered a violent backlash across the country, including in Guadalajara, one of the World Cup host cities.

At least 74 people were killed during the operation and subsequent clashes with suspected cartel members, though the government said only one was a civilian. Gunmen blocked roads in 20 states and torched vehicles and businesses, sending residents and tourists scrambling for cover.

“It feels like we’re in a war zone,” said Javier Perez, a 41-year-old engineer in Puerto Vallarta.

Despite the chaos, Infantino insisted there is no risk to football fans. However, the Portuguese Football Federation expressed caution, saying it is “closely monitoring the delicate situation” and may reconsider a friendly scheduled for March 29 in Mexico City.

Mexico, along with the United States and Canada, is set to host the World Cup from June 11 to July 19.
