Nollywood actor, Olumide Oworu, has opened up on his decision to venture into partisan politics, saying his move was motivated by concern over the direction Nigeria is heading.
The 31-year-old made the disclosure during a recent interview on Naija FM Lagos, where he explained that he wants to be part of those shaping policies that directly affect citizens.
According to him, the actions and decisions of political leaders impact everyday life, stressing that poor policymaking affects him just like every other Nigerian.
“I decided to join politics because of how the country is going. I know how Nigeria was when I was younger, but now things keep getting worse. I want to start a family and raise my children here,” he said.
Oworu added that becoming a policymaker would allow him contribute to decisions that determine the nation’s future.
“So, I have to make sure that I try my best to be among the policymakers because whatever policy that is being enacted would ultimately affect me like every other common person,” he noted.
He also pointed to the aging political class as another factor that pushed him into politics, stating that younger Nigerians would eventually bear the consequences of today’s policies.
“Most of the present crops of politicians are aging out and whatever policy they are making today, it is me and my friends who will be at the receiving end tomorrow,” he explained.
Oworu contested for the Lagos State House of Assembly seat representing Surulere Constituency I under the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections but lost to fellow actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliott. Despite the defeat, he said his political ambition remains intact.
He reiterated his desire to live and raise a family in Nigeria, adding that he hopes to contribute to improving governance in the country.
