The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued an urgent advisory to Nigerians residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following escalating military actions in the region.

The advisory comes in response to reported strikes by Israel and the United States on targets in Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions by Iran in some Gulf states.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA/PR/2026/21) from Abuja, the government urged Nigerian citizens to exercise heightened caution and follow safety protocols amid the volatile situation.

Key recommendations from the advisory include:

Maintain Constant Vigilance: Nigerians are advised to remain alert at all times and avoid areas near strategic, military, or government installations which may be potential flashpoints.

Follow Local Directives: Compliance with all security and safety instructions from local authorities is strongly advised to ensure personal safety.

Establish Communication with Relevant Embassies: The Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, as well as embassies in affected Gulf countries such as Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, are on high alert to provide consular assistance and facilitate communication for Nigerian citizens.

The Ministry assured that it will continue to assess the situation and provide updates as necessary. The statement emphasized that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains the top priority of the Federal Government.

In its advisory, the Federal Government also called on all parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate tensions and return to the negotiation table, highlighting the importance of dialogue for global peace and coexistence.

The statement was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, ANIPR, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja on Saturday, 28 February 2026.
