The Nigerian striker was one of the standout performers at the RAMS Park, scoring a goal and providing an assist as Galatasaray strengthened their position at the top of the league table.

Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen has explained why he declined the opportunity to wear the captain’s armband during his side’s 3-1 victory over Alanyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig on Saturday.

The Nigerian striker was one of the standout performers at the RAMS Park, scoring a goal and providing an assist as Galatasaray strengthened their position at the top of the league table.

The win saw the reigning champions extend their lead to five points, further boosting their title ambitions.

At the start of the encounter, Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira led the team out as captain.

However, a moment of leadership transition occurred in the second half when Torreira handed the armband to experienced German midfielder İlkay Gündoğan after being substituted.

In a surprising turn, Gündoğan later attempted to pass the captain’s armband to Osimhen.

But the Super Eagles star politely refused and returned it to the 35-year-old, urging him to continue leading the team on the pitch.

Speaking after the match, Osimhen said his decision was driven purely by respect and admiration for Gündoğan’s leadership qualities and influence within the squad.

“Ilkay is someone I respect very much, someone who is very valuable to me,” Osimhen said during his post-match interview. “He is an incredible person — calm, motivating and visionary.”

The 27-year-old striker admitted he felt it was only right for Gündoğan to keep the responsibility.

“It felt strange when he brought me the captain’s armband,” Osimhen added. “I gave it back to him so he could lead us. He helps us every time he comes into the game. He’s someone who deserves love and respect.”

Osimhen’s gesture has since drawn praise from fans and pundits, who view it as a sign of humility and strong team spirit within the Galatasaray dressing room.

On the pitch, the former Napoli forward continues to play a crucial role in Galatasaray’s title charge.

His goal against Alanyaspor added to his impressive tally this season, while his assist underlined his growing influence beyond just scoring.

With momentum firmly on their side, Galatasaray will now turn their attention to upcoming fixtures as they aim to maintain their advantage at the summit of the Turkish Super Lig standings.
