Concerned members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Lagos State Chapter, have called on the union’s national leadership to immediately suspend the State President, Comrade Sunday Sewanu Ogunfowora, over an ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a letter dated February 19, 2026, and addressed to the President General of NULGE in Abuja, the group urged strict compliance with Rule 27(ii) of the union’s constitution, which provides for the suspension of any officer under investigation for financial infractions.

The members alleged that Ogunfowora has been under investigation by the EFCC since December 2025 over allegations bordering on misappropriation, diversion of funds and money laundering.

They said the matter had been formally brought to the attention of the union’s National Body.

Citing the provisions of Rule 27(ii), the signatories argued that suspension during investigation is mandatory and not discretionary.

According to them, the rule clearly states that any officer who embezzles, misappropriates or diverts union funds “shall be suspended during interrogation,” pending the outcome of investigations, while the National Executive Council (NEC) may expel, remove or impeach such an officer upon a finding of guilt.

They expressed concern that despite the subsisting investigation, the National Body of NULGE had allegedly failed to invoke the constitutional provision by suspending the Lagos State President.

The continued retention of an officer under investigation for serious financial crimes, they warned, undermines discipline, accountability and public confidence within the union.

The group also noted that the embattled State President had previously relied on the same Rule 27(ii) provision to suspend several officers of the union, including the Branch Chairman of Yaba LCDA, during separate investigations. They argued that applying a different standard in his own case would amount to selective enforcement of the union’s constitution.

According to the concerned members, allowing the State President to remain in office sets a dangerous precedent and erodes the rule of law within the organisation. They stressed that no officer, regardless of rank or influence, is above the union’s constitution.

The members demanded that Ogunfowora be suspended forthwith, pending the conclusion of investigations by relevant law enforcement authorities.

They gave the national leadership seven days from receipt of the letter to effect the suspension, warning that failure to comply would leave them with no option but to pursue lawful and legal avenues to compel compliance.

They said the letter was written in good faith and in the interest of transparency, accountability and the long-term stability of the union. Copies of the correspondence were also sent to the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lagos State Command, for information and necessary action.
