Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has strongly dismissed as fake and mischievous a circulating letter purportedly extracted from his most recent memoirs.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, through his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the elder statesman urged the public to disregard the document entirely.

Obasanjo described the alleged excerpt as a fabrication designed to mislead Nigerians.

The statement comes just days ahead of Obasanjo’s 89th birthday on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

The former president used the opportunity to express gratitude to friends, well-wishers, and supporters who have sent birthday felicitations in advance.

Obasanjo, a prolific writer and author of several autobiographical works, including the multi-volume “My Watch” series detailing his military and civilian leadership experiences, has faced similar incidents of forged documents attributed to him in the past.

These have ranged from fabricated letters to political figures to misattributed statements on national issues.

No specific details about the content of the purported letter or the platform where it first appeared were provided in the official statement. Obasanjo’s team has not indicated any further action, such as legal steps, at this time.

The 89-year-old elder statesman, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1976 to 1979 and as democratically elected president from 1999 to 2007, continues to engage actively in commentary on governance, democracy, and continental affairs through his foundation and public interventions.
