Manchester City’s Premier League title pursuit suffered a setback on Wednesday night after Nottingham Forest fought back twice to secure a dramatic 2–2 draw at the Etihad Stadium, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side with costly dropped points in the race for the crown.
City appeared on course for victory after leading twice through Antoine Semenyo and Rodri, but Forest’s resilience ensured the champions were forced to settle for a share of the spoils in a match filled with late drama.
The result leaves City second in the table and seven points behind leaders Arsenal after 29 games, although Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand.
City dominated much of the contest and broke the deadlock in the 31st minute when Semenyo volleyed home from close range after a well-worked move involving Rayan Cherki. The hosts continued to control possession and threatened to extend their lead before halftime.
Forest, however, returned after the break with renewed energy and stunned the home crowd in the 56th minute when Morgan Gibbs-White improvised a clever back-heel finish to level the score.
Guardiola’s men quickly responded. Just six minutes later, Rodri rose highest to power home a header from a corner, restoring City’s advantage and seemingly putting them back on track for three crucial points.
With 14 minutes remaining, Elliot Anderson delivered a decisive moment of quality, exchanging passes with Callum Hudson-Odoi before curling a superb strike from the edge of the box into the bottom corner to make it 2–2.
City threw everything forward in the closing stages in search of a winner. Savinho came agonisingly close in stoppage time, only for Forest defender Murillo to produce a dramatic goal-line clearance to preserve the draw.
Despite enjoying the majority of possession and creating more chances, City were left frustrated by their inability to convert dominance into victory, a result that could prove pivotal as the Premier League title race intensifies.
