Manchester United caretaker boss Michael Carrick saw his impressive unbeaten run come to an abrupt end on Wednesday night as 10-man Newcastle United produced a dramatic late surge to defeat Manchester United 2–1 at St James’ Park.
Carrick had guided United through a seven-match unbeaten streak since taking over earlier this year, a run that included six victories and a draw, but the momentum was shattered in the closing moments by substitute William Osula’s stunning winner.
The Premier League clash delivered high drama from the first half, culminating in a chaotic stoppage-time sequence before the interval.
Newcastle seized the lead deep into added time when Anthony Gordon converted from the penalty spot after a foul involving Bruno Fernandes.
United, however, responded almost instantly. Just minutes later, Fernandes redeemed himself by whipping in a precise free-kick cross that Casemiro met with a powerful header to restore parity before halftime.
The game appeared to tilt in United’s favour when Newcastle were reduced to 10 men after Jacob Ramsey received his second yellow card in first-half stoppage time. With the numerical advantage, Carrick’s side dominated possession in the second half and pushed relentlessly for a winner.
Leny Yoro came closest when his towering header forced a brilliant save from Aaron Ramsdale, while Fernandes also went narrowly wide as United pressed forward.
Manager Eddie Howe reshuffled his side at the break, introducing Joe Willock for Harvey Barnes to reinforce midfield energy, while United responded with attacking changes, bringing on Amad Diallo and Joshua Zirkzee.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time and the contest seemed destined for a draw, Newcastle delivered the decisive blow.
Osula, introduced late in the match, latched onto a long ball during a swift counterattack, burst past the United defence and cut inside before curling a superb left-footed strike into the far corner beyond Senne Lammens.
The goal sent St James’ Park into raptures and secured a memorable victory for Newcastle despite their numerical disadvantage.
