The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, has praised Gregory University, Uturu, for its growing focus on technology-driven education, saying the institution is well positioned to become a leading centre for emerging disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence and Security Studies.

Governor Otti made the remark during the university’s 14th Matriculation Ceremony, where more than 600 newly admitted students were formally welcomed into the institution’s academic community.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Tertiary Education, Dr. Emeka Enyiazu, the governor commended the university’s commitment to innovation and academic development, noting that investments in forward-looking programmes are essential for preparing young Nigerians for the demands of the global knowledge economy.

He urged the newly admitted students to remain focused on their academic journey and strive for excellence.

“You are beginning an important phase of your life that will challenge your intellect, build your character and shape your future,” he said, encouraging the students to pursue distinction and avoid complacency.

In his remarks, the Chancellor of the university, Okechukwu Gregory Ibe Jr., welcomed the new students and reminded them that they were joining a community dedicated to nurturing ambition, creativity and leadership.

“You are not just entering a university; you are becoming part of a community that believes strongly in your potential and is committed to helping you achieve your goals,” he said.

Also speaking, the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Augustine Uwakwe, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Uwaoma Uche, advised the students to combine academic excellence with innovation and entrepreneurship.

He cautioned them against engaging in social vices capable of undermining their academic pursuits.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Cele U. Njoku, highlighted the institution’s ongoing expansion through international collaborations and the introduction of new academic programmes designed to meet the needs of emerging industries.

She also reiterated the university’s firm stance against cultism, indecent dressing and other acts of misconduct, stressing that discipline remains a core value of the institution.

The matriculation ceremony attracted several dignitaries, including traditional rulers, religious leaders and community stakeholders, underscoring the university’s growing influence within and beyond Abia State.
