Police step up security in Borno over rumoured protest

Quick Read

“The Borno State Police Command is aware of information circulating on various social media platforms regarding a purported protest,” Daso said.

The Nigeria Police Force in Borno State has heightened security amid social media reports suggesting that a protest may take place in the state.

In a statement issued early on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, said the police were aware of the online messages but stressed that authorities had not confirmed any planned demonstration.

“The Borno State Police Command is aware of information circulating on various social media platforms regarding a purported protest,” Daso said.

He added that, for now, the command had not received any verified report indicating that such a protest had been scheduled.

“At the moment, there is no confirmed report of any planned protest in the state,” he said.

Despite the absence of confirmation, the police assured residents that security measures had been strengthened.

“However, the Command remains vigilant and has put in place necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of all residents,” Daso added.

He advised residents to ignore unverified information online and continue with their lawful activities while remaining peaceful and law-abiding.

The police did not disclose the reason behind the rumoured protest.

The development follows an earlier directive by Acting Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, who instructed commissioners across the country to stay on alert over possible security threats linked to tensions surrounding the conflict involving Iran and actions by the United States and Israel.
