Government officials have been advised to always exercise caution when making public statements on matters that could give birth to public speculation. A group, Action Collective, gave the advice while reacting to a statement by the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, in which he referenced the name “Natasha” while responding to allegations made against him by a female vendor.

The group in a statement by its National Coordinator, Mr. Teddy Onyejuwe, stated that Mr Umahi’s reference to the name “Natasha” in his comments could easily be interpreted by members of the public as referring to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who had previously spoken publicly about allegations of sexual harassment.

He noted that although the Minister may not have intended to draw any direct connection, but, the use of the name “Natasha” in the context of the ongoing controversy has generated concerns and public reactions, particularly among her supporters and observers who believe that the remark could easily be linked to the Senator’s earlier complaint.

According to him, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan had no involvement whatsoever in the matter involving the female vendor and should not be drawn into the situation in any manner that could create a misunderstanding or unnecessary public speculation.

He, therefore, urged public officials to exercise restraint and careful judgment in their public remarks, especially when responding to sensitive issues that may inadvertently affect the reputation of other individuals.

Onyejuwe added that responsible communication remains essential in maintaining public confidence in leadership and ensuring that discussions around serious allegations are handled with the decorum and sensitivity they deserve.
