ADC Presidential Ticket: Atiku, Obi, Amaechi told to follow laid down rules
Quick Read
THM said all candidates must respect democratic rules and party processes as they compete for the ADC’s presidential ticket for the 2027 elections.
A group called The Handshake Movement (THM) has asked presidential aspirants in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governor Peter Obi, and former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, to follow the party’s rules.
THM said all candidates must respect democratic rules and party processes as they compete for the ADC’s presidential ticket for the 2027 elections.
In a statement by its National Secretary, Chinedu Okpalanma, THM stressed that unity among aspirants is important to make ADC a credible political alternative that can strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
The group pointed out that Nigeria is facing serious challenges, including economic hardship, rising insecurity, unemployment, and weakening institutions, which have reduced public trust in governance. Many Nigerians feel left out of decision-making and uncertain about the country’s future.
THM warned that democratic norms are slowly being weakened, often through reduced political choices, institutional manipulation, and opposition fragmentation. They said ADC is emerging as a platform for Nigerians seeking credible leadership and national renewal.
The group urged all presidential aspirants to approach the contest with patriotism and national responsibility. They emphasized that personal ambition should not divide the party, which many Nigerians now see as a vehicle for positive change.
THM called for a transparent and democratic ADC presidential primary that will strengthen the party, boost public confidence, and produce a candidate supported by all aspirants. They also discouraged politics based on ethnic or religious divisions, urging Nigerians to focus on competence, integrity, and leadership ability.
Finally, THM said it will consult with presidential aspirants, contribute policy ideas, and help mobilize support to make ADC a strong alternative for national leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.
