Oscar-nominated American and French actor, Timothée Chalamet has triggered a backlash from the performing arts world after making a dismissive remark about ballet and opera as art forms.

Chalamet, while speaking with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas about preserving cinema, claimed that no one cares about ballet and opera anymore.

He explained that ballet and opera are art forms that audiences do not care about.

“I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore. All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there”, he stated.

His comment quickly stirred criticism from stage actors, opera house and celebrities.
