Ibadan man docked for allegedly defaming judge on radio programme

A 60-year-old man, Taofik Akintola was arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for allegedly defaming a judge during a radio programme.

Akintola, who resides at No. 95, Arekemose Area, Olodo, Ibadan, was arraigned on a three-count charge of giving false information, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, and defamation.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Akeem Akinloye, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences on July 26, 2025, in Ibadan.

He said that the defendant allegedly defamed a National Industrial Court judge, Justice J.D. Peters, by accusing him on a radio programme of corruption and accepting gratification.

Akinloye told the court that the defendant was involved in a case before the judge alongside other parties but later went on a radio programme where he allegedly made the defamatory statements against the judge.

The prosecutor further alleged that the defendant also gave false information against one Olurinde Kolawole, Akanbi Adewale and Akande Abas.

He said that the defendant’s conduct was likely to cause a breach of the peace.

Akinloye said the offences contravened Sections 125A(b), 249(d), 373 and 375 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olabisi Ogunkanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

She thereafter adjourned the case until May 13 for hearing.
