England and Burnley defender Kyle Walker has officially retired from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished 15-year career with the Three Lions that saw him earn 96 caps.

The 35-year-old right-back, renowned for his blistering pace, defensive reliability, and leadership, made the announcement today in an emotional statement.

Walker, who last represented England in a friendly against Senegal in June 2025, cited the desire to step aside for emerging talent as a key factor in his decision.

“Playing for England has always been the greatest honour of my career,” Walker said, adding that “Every time I pulled on the shirt it meant a huge amount to me and my family. After a lot of thought, this feels like the right moment to step away and allow the next generation of players to come through.”

“I leave incredibly proud of the journey and grateful to every manager, teammate and supporter who has been part of it,” he continued.

“Representing your country is the biggest thing you can do in football and those memories with England will stay with me forever.”

Walker‘s international journey began with his senior debut against Spain in November 2011. Over the years, he became a mainstay in England’s backline, featuring at five major tournaments: the 2016, 2020, and 2024 UEFA European Championships, as well as the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. He scored one goal for his country and captained the side on occasion.

His retirement comes just months before the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where England, now under manager Thomas Tuchel, will aim to end their long wait for a major trophy.

Walker had not featured in recent squads, having lost his place amid competition from younger options and his club transitions, including a loan spell at AC Milan in early 2025 before joining Burnley permanently last July.

Widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest full-backs of his generation, Walker’s England exit marks the close of an era for the national team’s defense.

He departs with widespread praise for his longevity and contributions during a transformative period that saw England reach major finals and semi-finals.
