Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt continued their remarkable reputation as European giant-slayers on Wednesday, defeating Sporting CP 3–0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 playoff.
The side from northern Norway produced a composed and disciplined performance, extending a growing list of famous European scalps that has made the club one of the continent’s most feared underdogs.
Bodø/Glimt took the lead in the 32nd minute when Sondre Fet converted a penalty after a foul by Georgios Vagiannidis inside the box. The midfielder calmly placed the ball low into the right corner beyond goalkeeper Rui Silva.
The Norwegian side doubled their advantage just before halftime. In stoppage time of the first half, Ole Blomberg latched onto a precise through pass and fired a clinical finish inside the right post to make it 2–0.
Sporting attempted to fight back after the break, with efforts from Luis Suarez and Trincão, but Bodø/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin produced key saves to keep the Portuguese side at bay.
The hosts sealed an emphatic victory in the 71st minute when Kasper Høgh finished from close range after a well-timed assist by Jens Petter Hauge, sending the home supporters into celebration.
The victory adds another chapter to Bodø/Glimt’s astonishing Champions League run this season.
The Norwegian side shocked Europe earlier in the campaign by defeating Manchester City 3–1, a result widely regarded as one of the competition’s biggest upsets.
They also stunned Atletico Madrid away from home and produced an even greater shock by eliminating last season’s finalists Inter Milan with a 5–2 aggregate victory, including a famous win at the San Siro.
With a squad valued at only a fraction of Europe’s elite clubs and representing a town of barely 50,000 people, Bodø/Glimt’s rise has captured global attention.
