Step-by-Step plan proposed for state police

Understand the difference between crimes against the public and crimes against individuals.
The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Hashimu Salihu Argungu, has asked experts to carefully study the main problems affecting the Nigeria Police Force as Nigeria considers creating state police.
He said this when he welcomed a committee working on the plan for state police. The committee is led by Olu Ogunsakin and visited the PSC headquarters in Abuja.
The committee said it came to learn from the experience and knowledge of the PSC because the commission plays an important role in policing in Nigeria.
Professor Ogunsakin explained that the work ahead is very important and difficult. He said the committee cannot complete the task alone and needs the PSC’s knowledge to review the current policing system and help improve the police force.
In response, Argungu suggested a step-by-step process for successfully creating state police.
He advised the committee to first find out why many people are demanding state police and identify the problems that caused this demand.
Argungu also said the committee should:
Study the relationship between federal and state crimes.
Understand the difference between crimes against the public and crimes against individuals.
Review old laws that may no longer work well in the modern world.
He also recommended that the committee study other countries that already operate state police systems. By examining their successes and challenges, Nigeria can adapt useful ideas to fit its own situation.
Finally, he encouraged the committee to take enough time to do a thorough and effective job if more time is needed.
