Chelsea’s hopes of a top-four finish suffered a major blow on Saturday as Newcastle left Stamford Bridge with a 1-0 victory, courtesy of Anthony Gordon’s second-half tap-in.

The defeat sees the Blues slip to fifth in the Premier League standings.

Chelsea started brightly, with Alejandro Garnacho and Cole Palmer missing early chances that could have set the tone.

However, defensive lapses proved costly. Joe Willock exploited a gap in Chelsea’s defence to tee up Gordon, who calmly finished past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, leaving the home side stunned.

Controversy peppered the match. VAR reviewed two Chelsea incidents, but Wesley Fofana escaped a red card after fouling Gordon, while Reece James avoided conceding a penalty after a clash with Malick Thiaw.

Later, Chelsea’s appeals went unanswered when Nick Woltemade went down under a challenge from Palmer in the box.

Manager Rosenior’s changes, including the introduction of Liam Delap at halftime, failed to spark a revival. Delap’s effort was saved, and a late header went wide. Chelsea’s stoppage-time free-kick from James rattled the post, but it wasn’t enough to rescue a point.

The loss continues a worrying run of form for Chelsea, who have now won only one of their last five league games, raising questions over their ability to secure a Champions League spot this season.
