Former Military Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, on Saturday expressed strong confidence in the leadership of Bola Tinubu, saying the President is doing his best across key sectors to move Nigeria forward.

Gowon spoke with journalists in Abuja after meeting Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he said his visit was primarily to appreciate the President’s efforts in steering the country through challenging times.

“I came to see him and express my appreciation for the work he is doing for the country,” Gowon said, adding that “During the meeting, we discussed the various efforts the President is making and the progress Nigeria is recording.”

The elder statesman dismissed suggestions that the President should prioritise improvements in specific sectors, noting that national leadership requires a holistic approach that addresses multiple areas simultaneously.

When asked about areas where the President could improve, he said “I would say he is already doing his best across all sectors-political, economic, social and others. There is no single area to point to, because leadership requires paying attention to every aspect of national development.”

While acknowledging that security remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges, Gowon maintained that the administration is taking deliberate steps to tackle the problem.

“Of course, security remains one of the major challenges facing the country today, but the President is making every effort to address it for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he said.

“As the leader, he has to protect Nigeria’s interests in all areas, and I am satisfied with the steps being taken.”

Gowon also urged Nigerians to trust the government’s handling of the current situation in the country, stressing that the administration is managing national issues responsibly.

“Regarding the current situation in the country, I believe the government, under the leadership of Mr. President, is in the best position to manage it,” he stated, adding that “From what I can see, the administration is handling the matter carefully and responsibly, without creating further problems for the nation.”

The former leader expressed optimism that the government’s efforts would ultimately lead to peace and stability across the country.

“I am confident that the government is doing everything possible to ensure that Nigeria ultimately achieves the peace and stability that the country deserves,” he said.

Gowon, who led Nigeria between 1966 and 1975, remains one of the country’s most prominent elder statesmen and has continued to advocate for national unity, peace and reconciliation.
