Former Nigerian international footballer Henry Nwosu has died at the age of 62 after a brief illness.
Nwosu reportedly passed away at about 4:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving intensive medical care for several days.
The news of his death was announced by former teammate and fellow 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner Segun Odegbami, who shared the information on his media platforms.
According to Odegbami, Nwosu had spent five days in the hospital battling for his life before he eventually passed away.
Nwosu was widely celebrated for his contribution to Nigeria’s historic victory at the 1980 African Cup of Nations, where the Nigeria national football team won their first continental title on home soil.
He was the youngest member of the squad and was admired for his creativity, vision, and technical ability in midfield.
Following his retirement from professional football, Nwosu remained involved in the sport as a coach and mentor, contributing to the development of younger players across the country.
