St. Lawrence Greater Height school in Lagos has celebrated its cultural day, with educators emphasizing the need for young Nigerians to preserve and appreciate their cultural heritage.
Mrs. Kehinde Lucia Adeosun, the school proprietress, while speaking with P.M.NEWS, described culture as the foundation of identity and a vital part of a people’s existence.
She stressed the importance of culture preservation, stating that culture goes beyond tradition and encompasses the language, food, music, dressing, and general way of life of a people.

“Culture is a way of life of a people. Our culture is our pride and indeed our identity,” she said.
Adeosun noted that Nigeria’s strength lies in its rich cultural diversity, pointing out that the country is home to several ethnic groups including the Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Ibibio, Urhobo, and others.
She explained that exposing students to cultural activities helps them understand their background and build respect for other cultures.

“Education should not be seen as a means of academic excellence alone. We should teach our children about their cultures and also teach them to respect the culture of others,” she added.

Mrs. Titilope Arowojobe the school’s administrator, urged schools that have not embraced cultural celebrations to incorporate such events into their academic calendar.
“School activities should not be limited to classroom teaching alone. We should expose our children to their roots so they can understand the values of their culture,” she said.

She reiterated the institution’s commitment to promoting cultural awareness among students. She also noted that cultural events like the celebration help children develop pride in their heritage while fostering unity among people from different backgrounds.
The event featured students dressed in colorful traditional attire representing different Nigerian ethnic groups, alongside cultural performances, music, and displays of traditional cuisine.

Educators at the event expressed hope that such initiatives will encourage the younger generation to embrace and preserve Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
