The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale investigation into a viral video showing two students of Igbinedion Educational Centre in Benin allegedly bullying a younger student.

The disturbing footage, which circulated widely on social media, showed a bigger student repeatedly whipping a boy who was lying on the ground with a belt.

As a voice in the background pleaded for the boy to be spared, another larger student reportedly joined in, flogging and kicking the victim and at one point jumping on his ribs while he remained on the floor.

Reacting to the incident in a statement on Friday evening, the management of the school described the development as disturbing and reiterated that the institution maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards bullying and other forms of violence.

The school disclosed that the students involved had already been expelled as part of disciplinary measures taken by the authorities.

“Following an immediate investigation, the students responsible have been expelled from the school with immediate effect. Such conduct will never be tolerated within our school community.

“Our priority remains the safety, dignity and wellbeing of every student. We are providing support to those affected and are working closely with their families to ensure the matter is addressed with the seriousness it deserves.

“The incident has been reported to the appropriate authorities and, recognising that the students are minors, the school is cooperating fully,” the statement said.

However, in a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, the police commissioner directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area to visit the school and commence a detailed inquiry into the incident.

“Notwithstanding the action taken by the school, the Edo State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“The Command wishes to assure the general public that those involved in the bullying incident will be arrested and made to face the law accordingly, in line with their respective ages and in accordance with the provisions of the law.

“The Edo State Police Command totally condemns acts of bullying, violence or intimidation among students, and anyone found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement added.
