Manchester United boosted their hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League after defeating Aston Villa 3–1 in a thrilling Premier League encounter at Old Trafford on Sunday.

In a match packed with intensity and attacking football, the Red Devils held their nerve in the closing stages to secure a crucial three points in the tight race for European qualification.

United started brightly and were rewarded in the first half when Brazilian midfielder Casemiro broke the deadlock.

The experienced midfielder rose to the occasion to put the home side ahead, sending the Old Trafford crowd into celebration.

Villa, however, refused to back down and came out stronger after the break. Their persistence paid off when Ross Barkley restored parity, finishing off a well-worked move to bring the visitors level and briefly silence the home fans.

The game soon swung back in United’s favour. In the 71st minute, captain Bruno Fernandes produced a defence-splitting pass that carved open the Villa backline. Matheus Cunha latched onto the through-ball and calmly slotted past goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to restore United’s lead.

With Villa pushing forward in search of another equaliser, United found the decisive blow through substitute Benjamin Šeško. Introduced in the second half by interim manager Michael Carrick, the striker made an instant impact in the 81st minute, firing a sharp snapshot beyond Martínez to make it 3–1.

Villa attempted to mount a late response and pressed forward in the dying minutes, but United goalkeeper Senne Lammens remained composed, notably claiming a late corner as the hosts comfortably saw out the contest.

The victory ensures Manchester United remain firmly in contention for a top-four finish, while Villa’s Champions League ambitions suffer another setback after recent league defeats.
