Middle East Crisis: UEFA cancels Spain–Argentina finalissima

UEFA noted that several alternative options were explored but none proved acceptable to the Argentine Football Association.
The planned Finalissima match between Spain national football team and Argentina national football team has been cancelled after organisers failed to reach an agreement on a new date and venue.
In a statement on Sunday, UEFA said the match, originally scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, could not proceed due to scheduling complications linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which affected arrangements for the host location.
UEFA noted that several alternative options were explored but none proved acceptable to the Argentine Football Association.
Among the options considered was staging the match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, which Argentina rejected. UEFA also proposed a two-legged format, with the first match in Madrid on March 27 and a return leg in Buenos Aires before the next editions of the UEFA European Championship and Copa América, but this proposal was also declined.
A final suggestion to play a one-off match at another neutral European venue on March 27 or March 30 was also unsuccessful, as Argentina indicated they would only be available on March 31.
“As a result, and to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled,” the governing body said.
The Finalissima is a match between the winners of the European Championship and the Copa América. Argentina won the inaugural edition in 2022, defeating Italy national football team at Wembley Stadium in London.
The cancelled fixture had also been expected to feature Argentina captain Lionel Messi against Spain’s teenage star Lamine Yamal for the first time.
