Veteran Nollywood actress, Remi Surutu, has defended President Bola Tinubu over the rising cost of fuel in Nigeria, stating that the increase is driven by global factors rather than the policies of his administration.

Surutu made the remarks during the launch of EKO57, a political support group aimed at mobilising backing for Tinubu’s second-term bid.

Addressing concerns over the surge in petrol prices, the actress dismissed claims that the president is responsible, insisting that fuel pricing is influenced by decisions made at the global level.

“Like I fought with somebody who was saying, ‘Asiwaju caused the fuel hike.’ I said Asiwaju is not responsible for the rise in petrol prices. The price of fuel is decided by world leaders. The hike has nothing to do with Tinubu,” she said.

The actress, a known supporter of the president, reiterated her confidence in his leadership and encouraged Nigerians to exercise their voting rights freely without fear or intimidation.

Surutu also spoke glowingly about Tinubu’s family, describing them as “extremely very good people,” while lamenting what she termed a lack of unity among the Yoruba people.

“They are extremely very good people — the wife, the husband, the children. But the fact that we Yorubas do not love ourselves, we condemn ourselves. If we can just reflect on what is happening globally, we will realise we are still doing well,” she added.
