According to the petition, there have been instances where armed policemen and suspected thugs were allegedly deployed to forcefully take over citizens’ land across the state.

A civil society organisation, The Renewal Group, has petitioned President Bola Tinubu, calling for a public inquiry into alleged misconduct by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh.

In a letter dated March 16, 2026, and signed by its Convener, Lai Omotola, the group raised concerns over what it described as a pattern of alleged corruption, land grabbing, abuse of office, human rights violations, disobedience of court orders and unlawful demolition of citizens’ property.

The group warned that failure to urgently address the situation could trigger a broader security crisis in Lagos State.

According to the petition, there have been instances where armed policemen and suspected thugs were allegedly deployed to forcefully take over citizens’ land across the state.

It further claimed that property owners who resisted such actions were arrested and arraigned before mobile courts, leading to their remand at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

The group also alleged that court orders obtained by affected individuals were routinely ignored, while efforts to serve legal processes on the police authorities were allegedly frustrated.

“Unless you intervene in policing in Lagos State, the present lawlessness may escalate into a dimension the country has never witnessed before,” the group stated.

The petition further claimed that complaints submitted to the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Service Commission and other relevant authorities had not been addressed.

Citing a specific case, the group alleged that a car owner currently detained in Kirikiri was wrongfully accused of driving against traffic, insisting that a police officer had earlier seized the vehicle and committed the offence.

The Renewal Group also alleged that some influential individuals, including presidential aides, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, a serving senator and top officials within the Lagos State Government, were backing the Commissioner. It said details would be presented if a public hearing is constituted.

The group urged the President to set up an independent public inquiry to investigate the allegations, expressing confidence that such a move would restore public trust and provide redress for affected citizens.
