Harry Maguire is on the verge of signing a contract extension at Manchester United that would keep him at Old Trafford until 2027, with an option for an additional year, according to multiple reports.
The deal, first revealed by The Athletic’s David Ornstein and confirmed by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, is in its final stages with only details left to be finalized.
The new agreement represents a striking turnaround for the England center-back, who appeared destined for an exit just 18 months ago.
Maguire, 32, had attracted interest from several Italian clubs during the summer transfer window, but the defender’s priority was always to remain at Manchester United and fight for his place.
The decision to commit his future to the club marks the culmination of a remarkable resurgence under manager Ruben Amorim.
The center-back joined United from Leicester City in 2019 for a then-world-record fee of £80 million for a defender. After being named club captain, he endured a turbulent period that saw him lose the armband and fall down the pecking order under former manager Erik ten Hag.
At the start of the 2023-24 season, Maguire made just eight Premier League appearances and was heavily linked with a move to West Ham United, a transfer that ultimately collapsed.
However, injuries to teammates and a string of commanding performances helped Maguire re-establish himself as a reliable figure in the squad. Since Amorim’s arrival in November 2024, the Portuguese coach has repeatedly praised the veteran defender’s professionalism and leadership, making him a regular fixture in the starting XI.
The new contract, which runs through 2027 with an option to extend to 2028, reflects United’s confidence in Maguire’s continued value both on the pitch and in the dressing room. It also aligns with the club’s broader strategy of retaining experienced core players while reshaping the squad under Amorim.
Neither Manchester United nor Maguire’s representatives have commented officially, but an announcement is expected in the coming days once final paperwork is completed.
