The Delta State Police Command has launched an investigation into disturbing videos circulating online showing young women being harassed and allegedly sexually assaulted in Ozoro, Delta State.
The footage, which surfaced early Friday and quickly spread across Nigerian social media, shows scenes of chaos where young women were reportedly molested, with clothes torn in what eyewitness accounts describe as a coordinated attack during a local gathering.
Some posts accompanying the videos have controversially claimed that such acts are tied to a “tradition” in parts of the community, a claim that has triggered nationwide outrage and condemnation.
Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, described the situation as “alarming, disgusting and embarrassing,” making it clear that no cultural excuse would be tolerated.
“This is alarming, disgusting and embarrassing. The CP has ordered an investigation into the incident. The command condemns this in totality, no custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens,” Edafe said in a statement posted on X.
He confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has directed a full-scale probe into the incident.
“The Commissioner of Police urges Deltans to remain calm while assuring that those responsible for this barbaric act will be arrested and brought to justice,” he added.
The police also appealed to members of the public to come forward with credible information that could aid the investigation.
“The command calls for witnesses who can provide useful information,” Edafe stated.
The development comes as Nigerians continue to react angrily to the viral clips, with many demanding urgent action and clarity over what exactly happened.
