Iran has declared that access to the Strait of Hormuz is only restricted to countries it considers hostile, specifically the United States, Israel and their allies.
The country’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, told Kyodo News in a move that heightens uncertainty around one of the world’s most vital shipping routes.
“The Strait of Hormuz is open to all countries except those that are our enemies. Ships from the United States, Israel and their allies will not be allowed to pass.”
He added that Iran was willing to ensure safe passage for countries it regarded as neutral or friendly, noting that discussions with Japanese officials were ongoing to facilitate their vessels’ transit through the strait.
Araghchi’s remarks suggest a targeted approach rather than a blanket closure of the strait, which carries a significant portion of global oil exports.
The development comes amid escalating tensions in the region involving Iran, the United States and Israel as fears continue to grow over disruptions to energy supplies and global trade.
