Nigerian international Ademola Lookman was on target for Atletico Madrid on Sunday, but his effort proved insufficient as they suffered a 3-2 defeat to city rivals Real Madrid in a dramatic LaLiga clash.
Lookman gave Atletico a bright start, opening the scoring in the first half with a composed finish after latching onto a precise pass to beat the goalkeeper. The goal put the visitors in control and momentarily silenced the home crowd.
However, Real Madrid responded strongly after the break. Vinicius Junior equalised from the penalty spot before Federico Valverde capitalised on a defensive lapse to put the hosts ahead.
Atletico showed resilience and fought back into the contest, levelling the score through Nahuel Molina with a powerful long-range strike that restored parity at 2-2.
The decisive moment came when Vinicius Junior struck again, finishing clinically to hand Real Madrid a 3-2 lead that ultimately proved enough to secure victory.
Lookman’s early goal stood out as a key moment for Atletico, but the visitors were unable to maintain their advantage as Real Madrid’s attacking quality and composure turned the game around.
The match also saw late drama with Valverde sent off, but Atletico failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage despite mounting pressure in the closing stages.
The result leaves Atletico reflecting on missed opportunities, while Real Madrid strengthen their push in the LaLiga title race with another hard-fought derby win.
