The Police Command in Akwa Ibom State has issued a warning to political groups against staging rallies without official clearance, stressing that such actions could attract sanctions.
In a statement released on Monday in Uyo, the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfom John, said the command had intelligence reports indicating that two separate groups; Village Boys Movement and Renewed Hope Ambassadors, were planning rallies on March 28.
According to her, these events are already being promoted on social media despite not receiving police approval.
John emphasised that any political gathering must first be authorised by the police and conducted in line with regulations set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“Defaulters of INEC guidelines will be sanctioned accordingly. Any attempt to proceed with these unauthorised gatherings will attract the intervention of law enforcement agencies,” she said.
She reiterated that political activities must strictly follow approved timelines, adding, “It is absolutely vital that political activities should comply with the timelines and guidelines established by INEC.
“Political campaigns can only commence within the designated periods specified by INEC.”
The police spokesperson further warned that the command would not condone any activity capable of disrupting peace in the state, noting that offenders would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
She added, “The command therefore urges the organisers of these rallies to cease any further planning until proper authorisation is obtained from the police.”
