Terrorists bomb Niger Bridge, kill eight, cut off communities

Suspected terrorists have bombed a strategic bridge in Niger State, killing at least eight people and severing a vital transport route in the Borgu Local Government Area.

The explosion, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, targeted a bridge along Luma Road linking Luma, Babana and Agwara communities.

Authorities said the attackers deployed an improvised explosive device (IED), damaging the structure and cutting off movement across the corridor.

Police in Niger State confirmed that the blast took place around 2:00 a.m., with reports reaching security operatives at about 6:30 a.m., prompting clearance operations in the area.

The attack turned deadly when a vehicle travelling between nearby communities ran into the planted explosive, killing all eight occupants, including the driver.

The destroyed bridge is considered a critical link for rural trade and mobility, particularly for access to the Babana border market, a major commercial hub that attracts traders weekly.

Its destruction is expected to isolate communities, disrupt supply chains and deepen economic hardship in the area.

The bombing comes amid a broader resurgence of militant violence across Nigeria, with attacks increasingly shifting beyond the traditional northeast theatre.

Recent weeks have seen coordinated suicide bombings in Maiduguri and assaults on military formations, underlining what experts describe as the resilience and evolving tactics of jihadist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP.

Data from security reports also indicate a sharp rise in terrorism-related deaths in Nigeria, with fatalities increasing significantly in the past year despite global declines.

Authorities say monitoring and clearance operations are ongoing, but the attack raises fresh concerns about intelligence gaps and the ability of security agencies to pre-empt threats, particularly in forested and border regions.
