Nigeria must mobilize its resources and efforts to counter the scourge of extremism, and it is imperative that Imams in mosques acknowledge their critical role in perpetuating or preventing radicalization.

Unfortunately, some Imams have been accused of promoting ideologies that incite violence and glorify terrorism, rather than fostering peace and understanding. The disturbing trend of some Nigerian Muslims expressing support for Iran’s actions, despite its conflicts with Israel and the USA, underscores the insidious influence of radical teachings in Mosques.

The pulpit is a powerful platform, and imams wield significant influence in shaping public opinion and moulding the worldview of their congregants.

Regrettably, some have used this influence to propagate extremist ideologies, often with devastating consequences. This has created a culture of intolerance, where terrorist groups are lionized, and dissenting voices are silenced.

To stem this tide, Nigeria needs a comprehensive deradicalization program that targets mosques and Imams, promoting a more nuanced understanding of Islam and encouraging moderate Islamic teachings.

A multifaceted approach is required, involving the vetting of imams for extremist ideologies, revising sermon content to promote peace and tolerance, and engaging with local communities to address grievances and promote economic empowerment.

Education and interfaith dialogue are also essential in challenging extremist narratives and fostering greater understanding between different faiths and communities.

The international community can play a supportive role by sharing best practices, providing resources, and offering expertise to help Nigeria develop effective deradicalization programs.

However, ultimately, it is up to Nigerian authorities to take ownership of this issue, ensuring that Imams are held accountable for promoting peace, tolerance, and understanding.

By tackling extremism at its roots and promoting a culture of peace and coexistence, Nigeria can become a beacon of hope, demonstrating that deradicalization is possible and paving the way for global understanding and cooperation.

However, all I crave is a world without weapons and violence.
