Quick Read
This development adds to the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, as different factions continue to lay claim to key positions within the party.
A High Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has ordered the arrest of Kabiru Turaki, who is recognized as a factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The arrest order was issued by Justice U.P. Kekemeke after Turaki failed to appear in court for the hearing of his case. The court noted that he did not provide any reasonable explanation for his absence.
According to the judge, appearing before the court is a legal obligation, and Turaki’s failure to do so without justification could not be ignored. As a result, the court directed that he be arrested and brought before it.
The case against Turaki was filed by the Nigeria Police Force, led by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). He is accused of giving false information to the police in a petition dated October 2022.
The charge against him contains a single count, focusing on the alleged false statement, which is considered an offence under the law.
This development adds to the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, as different factions continue to lay claim to key positions within the party.
Observers say the court’s decision could have wider political implications, especially as the party prepares for future elections.
