A 37-year man, Daniel Adayi, was on Thursday, arraigned before a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly assaulting a woman.

Adayi, a driver who resides at Gwarinpa Abuja, is being charged with assault, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Mrs. Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Miss Okorie Gift of Mpape Abuja reported the matter at the Galadima Police Station on Feb. 19.

Nwachukwu said that the complainant went to her new apartment at Gwarinpa area, only to meet the defendant already in occupation.

He said that attempts by the complainant to make the defendant to speak with landlord was refused by the defendant.

“He threw the phone at the complainant, and violently attacked her, beat her up and tore her clothes,” he said.

The prosecutor said that during interrogation by the police, the defendant made confessional statements that showed admittance to the crime.

Nwachukwu said that the offence contravened Sections 79, 263 and 264 of the penal code.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Musa Jobbo, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000, and one surety in like sum.

Jobbo ordered that the surety must produce reliable means of identification, and should reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The Magistrates adjourned the matter until April 16 for hearing.
