ASUU threatens strike over salary arrears, pension irregularities

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum to the federal government to commence payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” Piwuna said.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government four days to implement the newly approved salary structure for university lecturers, warning that failure to comply will trigger a nationwide strike.

ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, issued the ultimatum on Thursday while addressing staff at Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State.

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum to the federal government to commence payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” Piwuna said.

The warning comes months after ASUU and the government renegotiated a salary agreement in January to resolve long-standing disputes dating back to the controversial 2009 FG-ASUU pact. Despite initial optimism, many federal universities have struggled to pay salaries, with some yet to settle January and February wages.

The union said delays are partly linked to challenges in passing the 2026 national budget. ASUU’s ultimatum intensifies pressure on the government to act promptly and avert another disruption to academic activities in public universities.
