The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says 32.72% of candidates who sat the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, 2026-First Series, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
The figure, which represents a marginal increase of 5.76 percentage points compared to the 2025 First Series, was contained in a press release issued by the Council on Friday.
WAEC said a total of 10,480 candidates sat the examination conducted between January 28 and February 14, 2026, at 166 centres across Nigeria.
Of that number, it disclosed that 3,429 candidates met the benchmark of five credits including English and Mathematics, saying”Among them, 1,847 (53.86%) were male while 1,582 (46.14%) were female.”
“The percentage of candidates in this category in the WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2024 and 2025 – First Series, that is, those who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, were 30.95% and 26.96% respectively,” WAEC stated.
“Thus, there is a marginal increase of 5.76% in performance in this regard.”
The Council also reported that 4,598 candidates (43.87%) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics.

The body disclosed that 43 candidates with special needs registered for the examination, including 11 visually impaired candidates, four with impaired hearing, and four albinos.
WAEC said all were adequately provided for during the examination.
The Council also disclosed that 75 candidates’ results, representing 0.72% of the total, are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.
“The cases are under investigation and will be presented to the appropriate Committee of the Council for determination.
