Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez has explained why he wears the number 37 jersey for Nigeria.
The Rangers player made his debut for the national team in a friendly match against Iran on Friday.
Speaking to Rangers TV, Fernandez said he chose the number to honour his late brother, who died at the age of 37.
“My brother died at 37, so wearing this number is my way of remembering him,” the 24-year-old said.
“There was a big age difference between us over 15 years so while I was still young, he already had his own family and was in university.
“He studied Engineering and had three children. After he passed away, I played a match just a few days later. Since then, everything I do on the pitch is for him.”
