Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has confirmed that 28 persons were killed following an attack by gunmen in Angwan Rukuba community, Jos North Local Government Area.

The governor disclosed this in a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, describing the incident as tragic and senseless, and assuring residents that those responsible would be brought to justice.

According to him, the attack occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m., when the victims, who were law-abiding citizens, were going about their normal activities before the assailants struck.

“It is with a heavy heart and profound sorrow that I address you today… this unfortunate event led to the loss of 28 innocent lives and left many others injured,” the governor said.

Following the incident, the state government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area from midnight on March 29 to April 1, 2026, to enable security agencies to restore order and prevent further escalation.

Mutfwang said he visited the affected community alongside security chiefs to assess the situation and also met victims receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, noting that most of the injured were in stable condition.

He assured that the Plateau State Government would take full responsibility for the medical expenses of the injured and provide support to families of the deceased, including arrangements for dignified burials.

The governor further revealed that a suspect who had earlier issued threats to the peace of the state had been apprehended, adding that security agencies have been directed to track down all those involved in the attack.

“We are committed to ensuring that all those involved in this heinous act are swiftly brought to justice,” he said.

While commending residents for maintaining restraint, he urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.

As part of measures to strengthen security, the governor directed strict enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles within the Jos Greater Master Plan and announced that a State Security Council meeting had been convened to review and reinforce the state’s security architecture.

He reaffirmed that the state would not succumb to fear or intimidation, adding that his administration remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring lasting peace across Plateau State.
