The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent killings in Jos, Plateau State, describing the attack on innocent residents as gruesome and unacceptable.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the association said the violence, which occurred on Palm Sunday, has once again highlighted the deepening insecurity across the country and the vulnerability of citizens.

The NBA noted that the timing of the attack made it even more tragic, as a day set aside for worship, reflection, and peace was turned into one of fear, bloodshed, and mourning.

According to the President of the association, Afam Osigwe, the recurring nature of such killings suggests a dangerous pattern of impunity, where perpetrators continue to evade justice.

“When perpetrators of mass violence continue to go unpunished, it sends a dangerous message that human life is expendable,” the statement said.

The NBA warned that the continued failure to hold offenders accountable could erode public trust in government and weaken national unity.

It called on security agencies to swiftly identify and prosecute those responsible for the Plateau attack, while urging both the federal and state governments to strengthen security in vulnerable communities.

The association also stressed the need for improved intelligence gathering and more proactive response strategies to prevent further attacks.

It added that beyond security interventions, victims and their families deserve justice, support, and reassurance that their suffering will not be ignored.

The NBA extended condolences to the families of those killed and to the people of Plateau State, reaffirming its solidarity with all affected.

The body further stated that the recurring attacks raise serious constitutional concerns, particularly regarding the protection of the right to life as guaranteed under the Constitution.

It maintained that every Nigerian has an inviolable right to life and security, warning that failure to uphold these rights undermines the rule of law and national stability.
