The Democratic Republic of Congo have secured a historic return to the FIFA World Cup, ending a 52-year absence with a hard-fought 1-0 extra-time victory over Jamaica in a tense playoff clash.
The victory marks only the second World Cup qualification in the nation’s history, achieved in dramatic fashion after a fiercely contested encounter in Zapopan, Mexico.
With both sides chasing a rare appearance on football’s biggest stage, the stakes were high from the outset.
DR Congo started brightly and thought they had taken an early lead when Cedric Bakambu found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside, denying the Leopards a dream start.
Undeterred, the African side continued to dominate proceedings, creating a series of chances. Bakambu came close again midway through the first half, rising unmarked to meet a free kick, but his effort was comfortably gathered by Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake.
Despite DR Congo’s control, clear-cut opportunities proved elusive, with several attempts failing to test the Jamaican defence. Jamaica, meanwhile, struggled to assert themselves early on but gradually grew into the contest, with Kasey Palmer forcing a block after a well-worked move around the half-hour mark.
The match remained finely balanced through regulation time, with both teams unable to break the deadlock, pushing the contest into extra time.
It was in the additional period that DR Congo finally made their dominance count, finding the decisive goal to seal qualification and spark celebrations among players and supporters alike.
The result not only secures DR Congo’s place at the next World Cup but also represents a landmark achievement for the nation, signalling a resurgence on the global football stage after more than five decades away.
