Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the state of electricity supply, saying recent remarks by the President in Jos validate his earlier campaign promise on power delivery.
In a statement shared on social media, Obi recalled Tinubu’s 2023 pledge to Nigerians that he should not be re-elected if he failed to provide stable electricity within four years.
“During the 2023 campaign, President Tinubu made a clear electoral promise: ‘If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term,’” Obi said.
The former Anambra governor argued that the country’s power situation has worsened since Tinubu assumed office, noting that generation has dropped below 4,000 megawatts on average while electricity tariffs have increased.
He added that Nigeria’s per capita electricity consumption remains among the lowest globally, placing it significantly below the African average.
“Today, the electricity power supply is less than 4,000 megawatts on the average, and Nigerians are paying higher tariffs,” Obi stated.
Obi also referenced Tinubu’s recent visit to Jos following the Plateau attacks, where the President reportedly cited lack of electricity at the airport as one of the reasons for his brief stay.
“At a time when Nigerians are enduring days without power, our leaders cannot even stay a few minutes without it,” he said.
The former presidential candidate accused the administration of failing to meet expectations, calling for greater accountability and leadership commitment.
“Now is the time to stop incompetent leaders who prioritise their own comfort over the well-being of the people and make empty promises,” Obi added.
