Seun Okinbaloye, a presenter on Channels Television, has said he is not afraid of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Earlier, Wike had said he would have “broken his TV screen and shot” Okinbaloye because of the journalist’s comment that a one-party system could harm Nigeria’s democracy.
Many people criticized Wike’s statement, including Amnesty International, which described his words as dangerous and irresponsible.
Reacting on Sunday, Okinbaloye stood by his opinion and said violent language should not be used in a democracy.
He explained that democracy is at risk if elections do not allow fair competition.
He also said the message is not just for politicians but for all Nigerians who care about the country’s progress.
Okinbaloye added that Wike later called him to explain that his comments were not meant the way they sounded.
Even so, he stressed that threats or violent words are never acceptable in a democratic society.
He concluded by saying he is not afraid and will not be intimidated, and that he will continue to ask important questions and hold leaders accountable.
