Lagos rolls out parking, diversion plans for Fanti carnival
The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversions and road closures ahead of the Fanti Carnival scheduled to take place on Monday, April 6, 2026.
The event will be held around Tafawa Balewa Square, a popular venue on Lagos Island known for hosting major cultural and public events. The carnival is expected to attract a large number of participants, performers, and spectators from across the state and beyond.
To ensure the procession runs smoothly and to maintain public safety, the government said several roads leading to the venue will be temporarily closed to vehicles. The affected routes include:
King George V Road (near Mobil Filling Station)
Flag House road heading toward TBS
Force Road heading toward TBS
Onikan Roundabout inbound TBS
WaterBoy Roundabout near Old Defence House
In addition, all connecting roads to Moloney Road will also be closed during the event. These include:
Military Road (by Old Defence Building)
Ajasa Street
Boyle Street
Hawley Street
These restrictions are expected to reduce congestion and allow free movement for carnival participants, including cultural troupes, musicians, and dancers who will be part of the colorful street parade.
To address parking concerns, the state government has arranged designated parking areas for members of the public. Available car parks include:
Yoruba Lawn Tennis Club car park
Zone 2 car park (opposite Island Club along King George V Road)
Museum Kitchen car park
The Bell car park (near Island Maternity)
Motorists are strongly advised to plan their trips ahead of time, use alternative routes where necessary, and expect delays in and around Lagos Island during the carnival hours.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will be stationed at key points to manage traffic, guide drivers, and ensure order throughout the event.
The government also appealed to residents, commuters, and visitors to cooperate with traffic officials and security personnel.
It emphasized that these temporary measures are necessary to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and successful cultural celebration for everyone attending the Fanti Carnival.
