Arsenal FC snatched a dramatic late victory over Sporting CP on Tuesday in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash, with a stoppage-time goal sealing a 1-0 win in a tightly contested encounter.
The breakthrough came deep into added time when Kai Havertz struck in the 90th minute, converting under pressure to give Arsenal a crucial advantage heading into the return leg.
The match had appeared destined for a stalemate after both sides struggled to find a decisive finish despite several promising opportunities.
Earlier, Arsenal thought they had taken the lead in the 63rd minute through Martin Zubimendi, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for offside.
Sporting CP created a number of threatening moments, particularly through Geny Catamo and Luis Suarez, but were repeatedly denied by impressive goalkeeping. Arsenal’s shot-stopper also delivered a series of crucial saves to keep the visitors in contention.
The London side, managed by Mikel Arteta, dominated possession for large spells of the second half, gradually asserting control as the game wore on.
However, injuries to key players, including Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard, forced tactical adjustments that disrupted their rhythm.
Despite Sporting’s resilience and organised defensive display, Arsenal’s persistence paid off in the dying moments, with Havertz emerging as the match-winner.
The result gives Arsenal a narrow but significant advantage ahead of the second leg, as they continue their push for a place in the semi-finals of Europe’s elite club competition.
