Nigerian activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, has called out popular Nigerian pastors for the level of accessibility to church-owned universities.
The politician, while speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, questioned the disparity between the large followership of some churches and the affordability of the institutions they have established.
He claimed that most members who pay tithes and offerings find it impossible to afford the tuition fees of their church-owned institutions. Sowore also claimed that the churches do not build the schools with the average member in mind.
“You build Covenant university, and then ask poor people to come to church, you’ll go and drive them from Ajegunle with your Holy Ghost buses but their children cannot go to Covenant university. it’s the children of sinners that ended up going to your university. Most of them are children of Alhajis stealing money in Abuja. People who come to church religiously and pay tithes and offerings that you ask from them, they can’t afford to send their children to your university. Occasionally, they’ll the do charity and say that well, we gave scholarships to children of our church members,” he stated.
His comment quickly stirred up the debate of the role of religious institutions in promoting affordable education in the country.
