Prominent members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, ex-Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Senate President David Mark, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and Peter Obi, are leading the “Save Nigeria Democracy” protest in Abuja.
The march, which began at Maitama Roundabout, is heading toward the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The ADC and its leaders are accusing the electoral body of partisanship, claiming it is acting in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to undermine democracy in the country.
Protesters were seen carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Hands off our courts”, while Amaechi addressed participants from a van along the route.
In posts on X, Atiku described the protest as peaceful and aimed at safeguarding democracy.
“Myself and other leaders of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire. Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship,” Atiku wrote.
Peter Obi also urged well-meaning Nigerians to join the protest, emphasizing the need to resist a one-party system.
“We say NO to a one-party system and for that today we’re calling out Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land,” Obi posted on X.
